Face Painting for Beginners

If you've ever been to a carnival or school party, no doubt you have seen kids running around with their faces painted. There is no doubting the fact that face painting is very popular and more so for kids who love to have butterflies, cats, fairies, dogs, ghosts, witches and wizards painted on their faces. You need not go to a professional for getting face painting done as it is easy to learn the art yourself and with a few practice sessions, it would be possible for even novice painters to learn how face painting is done. In fact, at our local carnival, face painters are given about 30 minutes of training and shown some standard shapes that they can paint. They are then given the paint, some brushes, some water, and a few paper towels, and they are let loose as official face painters!

How to Face Paint: Value the Paint, and Try to Visualize the End Result

The first thing to remember is that you ought to value your paint and buying manufactured face paints would be a lot cheaper than buying professional face paint or stage makeup. Secondly, you should use a sponge in order to apply the paint when thinking of covering a large area or putting a base color on.

You should also remain patient and allow the paint to dry before applying a second coat. Applying thin layers is preferable to applying one thick layer since thick layers are prone to crack.

You should learn to visualize how the finished face painting job would look like and not experiment while face painting. You can also use soaked bits of cotton wool to create a bumpy nose or big eyebrows and for an extra-ghostly effect, after the face painting work has been completed, you may apply dusting of flour.

It is also a good idea to use a stencil if you are not good at freehand painting or is short of time. A quicker alternative would be to use temporary tattoos though some people may have skin that reacts badly to them and you may even use glitter to create a quick and dramatic effect, though it does spread too much and is also hard to remove.

You should also have a mirror on hand so that the people that have had their face painting work done can see the results and having a high stool on hand will save the artist (that is, you) from excessive bending for long periods, when painting many faces, and thus prevent back aches.

You should also have a ready stock of tissues on hand as face painting requires a lot of wiping of the hands as well as brushes. Also, face painting is often messy, though fun, and baby wipes work faster and is also useful to clean up any mistakes along the way.

Remember to work slowly, take your time and enjoy the painting. Remember that the child getting the face painting is enjoying the act of painting in itself. They are eagerly waiting to see what they look like in the mirror, so make your face painting a good one!
