How to Paint a House

If your house needs painting, you know how expensive it can be. Even if you get three quotes from competing painter, you may find it is cost prohibitive to hire someone to paint your house. So why not do it yourself? You will only need a ladder, some tarps, and paint and brushes. You will save potentially thousands on dollars in labor in painting your house. So where do you start?

Safety for House Painters

Safety is a major concern that needs to be dealt with adequately when performing house painting as there is a certain degree of incidental risk involved with the process of painting a house. One could fall off the ladder or stage and other risks involved include keeping the safety of children uppermost in mind. Painting materials may be extremely poisonous and therefore one cannot be too careful in using and storing these items.

Health of a person is another cause for concern and paint can present a health hazard, if used improperly. In addition, some of the materials used in house painting may be highly inflammable and so, should be kept away from open flames. Also, electricity is an area which should be kept secure from washing and if one is removing wall plates then one should take care to not touch into the electrical box. Finally, use gloves and goggles while house painting.

Choosing the Correct Paint

It is not only the color of the paint but also type of paint as well as gloss factor that need to be taken into consideration when house painting. Latex as well as oil base are most commonly used terms when house painting. However, many brands of latex may be non-latex or artificial-latex but it is not very bad as there are continuous improvements being made in synthetic materials that perform just like latex. In addition, one may need to consider overall appearance, ease of use and serviceability when selecting the gloss.

House painting includes procedures for the interiors, the exteriors as well as techniques for painting paneled doors, accessing a stairwell and sheetrock repairs. You may have to prepare before undertaking the actual painting and for this one may need to get a good idea about what the home painting interior process actually involves.

Having assessed the situation, one would require getting the right materials for the house painting work. This would include sandpaper, latex caulk, spackling compound and masking tape to name a few items necessary for the interior work.

Before beginning the house painting work, one should move as much furniture as possible to another room and for large and difficult to move pieces of furniture, one may move them to the center of the room and cover with plastic drop cloths. Also, one should take down pictures as well as curtains and cover the floors with drop cloths.

Painting your house or just painting a room or two can give you an instant change in your home décor and will make you feel better about your house. Couple that with saving a lot of money by doing it yourself, house painting is something that should be considered by everyone.
